Should an IoT product use cellular or Wi-Fi?

Use cellular when the device needs managed connectivity outside a controlled local network. Use Wi-Fi when the device is installed where the network is known, power is available and lower service cost matters.

Is Wi-Fi always cheaper than cellular for IoT?

Wi-Fi avoids SIM and data-plan cost, but it can add onboarding, router compatibility and support cost. Cellular adds recurring service cost but can simplify distributed deployments where local Wi-Fi is unreliable or unavailable.
