Use cellular when the product must work outside buyer-controlled Wi-Fi, across distributed sites or under a managed SIM and operator plan. Use Wi-Fi when the device can rely on a known local network and needs lower service cost.
The right choice depends on who controls the network after the product leaves the factory.

Use cellular when the device needs managed connectivity outside a controlled local network. Use Wi-Fi when the device is installed where the network is known, power is available and lower service cost matters.
Wi-Fi avoids SIM and data-plan cost, but it can add onboarding, router compatibility and support cost. Cellular adds recurring service cost but can simplify distributed deployments where local Wi-Fi is unreliable or unavailable.
A product family can support both paths, but it should be planned early. Radio layout, antennas, enclosure, firmware, power budget, certification files and production tests may change between versions.
